Apple has once again taken the lead in the tablet market, with its iPad lineup securing a commanding 42.3% market share in the fourth quarter of 2024, according to a recent Canalys report. The tech giant shipped an estimated 16.9 million iPads during this period, marking a significant increase from 14.8 million units in Q4 2023.
The report highlights that Apple’s iPads continue to rise in popularity among both individual and business users. The combination of reliable hardware, seamless software integration, and long-term software support has positioned the iPad as a top choice across various price points. Apple’s broad range of iPads caters to a wide array of consumer needs, solidifying its dominance in the tablet market.
The surge in iPad sales in 2024 is largely attributed to the introduction of new-generation iPad models. Notably, the updated iPad Mini featuring the A17 Pro chip and the M4 iPad Pro with the M4 processor have contributed significantly to Apple’s growth. Meanwhile, the affordable iPad Air, equipped with the M2 chip, has become increasingly popular among users seeking a well-rounded, budget-friendly device without compromising on performance.
In contrast, Samsung, Apple’s Android competitor, lags behind with just 7 million tablets shipped in Q4 2024, capturing a 17.8% market share—less than half of Apple’s. Other brands like Lenovo, Huawei, and Xiaomi are gaining ground but still trail far behind in market share.
Apple’s dominance in the tablet market is particularly evident in India, where the demand for high-end tablets and smartphones is booming. Apple is focusing on expanding its retail presence and strengthening its supply chain to capitalize on this rapidly growing market and drive further customer acquisition.
Looking ahead to 2025, Apple is expected to refine its iPad lineup, with rumors suggesting an improved iPad Air and an entry-level iPad. The next iPad Air, anticipated for release in the first half of 2025, may feature a 90Hz display, Wi-Fi 7 connectivity, and a new chip—potentially the M3 or M4. The upcoming model is also expected to offer more color options and a redesigned Magic Keyboard, ensuring Apple continues its stronghold in the tablet market.
